Critique Project 2
Project 3 Assigned
Check out the FabLab
Making a custom Dice in 123D design.
1) Get a cube
2) Round the edges (if you want)
3) Extrude image or text to be used for dice sides
4) Subtract extrusions from dice sides
The easy way to get images on your dice!
1) Use Photoshop to:
1a) make the image black and white using "Threshold"
1b) change the "Image Size" to 300 pixels on the longest side
1c) "Save As" a jpeg with your name one it.
2) send it to Joe for processing into an STL
Making 3D game pieces
- Same as making a dice except for with multiple pieces being put together.
- Make sure parts are touching if not embedded into each other a little
- Export 3D as an STL . Choose the "Fine" and "Combine Objects" options!
How to use Makerware
Prepare for Printing:
Rafts: used to make a small island for your model to be built on.
Supports: hold up areas of a model that are unprintable otherwise.
* no long rises
* 45 degree angle or higher
Shells: Outside layers of a model.
Infill: Percent of the interior of a 3d model that is filled with plastic.
Layer Height: layer thickness of each printed layer of plastic.
* Low Resolution (Faster*) is the best choice for most models
Preparing your 3d models for printing
1) open Makerware
2) Click on 'Prepare' and "Add File" to import your .STL's to the print bed
3) Use the 'Move' tool to separate the models from each other
* remember any models that are touching will be printed as a single piece
4) Use the 'Scale' too to resize the 3d models to the proper size
a- scale the piece to the proper hight and width. Set the model at the correct hight and adjust for the width if necessary.
5) Use 'Save to Library' to save your .Thing file to the desktop
6) Change your 'Settings'
For Game Pieces
Resolution - Low(Faster)Infill - 10%# of Shells - 3Layer Height - .30 mm
For Dice
Resolution - Low(Faster)Infill - 45%# of Shells - 2Layer Height - .30 mm
7) Export Print File or Save Your File
- Take a screen shot of the Export Info and keep it with your .x3g file. You will hand in both to me.
8) Show Joe your .stl, .thing, .x3g & Export Info screen shot to be approved for printing. Your files should be labeled with your first name and last initial ie.. joevs.thing
We have 3 Makerbots. Two Replicator 2's and a Replicator Mini.

Print Bed Size 3.9" L x 3.9" W x 4.9" H
To print:
1) Save your file as a .Thing set up for the Replicator Mini.
2) Use your USB thumb drive to transfer your file to the iMac in the FabLab
3) Open your file in Makerware and print to the Replicator Mini
Replicator 2.1:
Print Bed Size 11.2" L x 6" W x 6" H
To print:
1) Export your file as a .x3g. (Make sure it is set up for the Replicator 2)
2) Use the SD card reader to transfer your file to the SD card for the printer
3) Insert the SD card into the printer and use the menu on the front panel to print the file
Replicator 2.2:
Print Bed Size 11.2" L x 6" W x 6" H
To print:
1) Save your file(s) as a .stl
2) Use your USB thumb drive to transfer your file to the Mac laptop in the FabLab
3) Open your file in Makerware, Set up your file for printing and print to the Replicator 2

Review Joe's Game
Custom Card Game
Theme
- Giant monster destroying a city
Game Mechanics
- Dice Rolling
- Modular Board
- Set Collection
- Memory
Exceptions
- Monsters can upgrade for new attacks and to fight each other
- collect the most element points by destroying city blocks, Military Defense Units (MDUs) and defeating the opponents monster
- 2 decks of cards
- 30-40 min play time
Things I like:
- Card collection to track points
- Card flipping to track damage to City Locations
- MDU cards interaction with City Locations
- The game is color coded. 'Elements' and 'Monsters' are based on the color wheel. Opposites effect each other.
Things I don't like:
- Need to track life points with pen and paper
- Monster Battles
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Play games
- Dungeon
- Real Game of Life
-------------------------------------------------------------------
